13th June 2025
Take 5 June
A monthly review of the top five issues raised in calls to the Parkinson’s NSW InfoLine team (call 1800 644 189).
- The NDIS and Our NDIS Advocate – Understanding and accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be complex, especially for people living with Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s NSW provides support through our dedicated NDIS Advocate, who can assist with eligibility, applications, plan reviews, and navigating services. If you are under 65 and have a Parkinson’s diagnosis reach out to our InfoLine to connect with the Advocate and receive personalised guidance through the process.
- Upcoming Changes to My Aged Care – Important changes are coming to My Aged Care in 2025, with a new model for in-home aged care being introduced. For accurate, up-to-date information and to check your eligibility for aged care services, we encourage you to contact My Aged Care directly on 1800 200 422. It’s recommended that assessments be done early, ideally before support is urgently needed, to ensure timely access to services.
- Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) – Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a treatment option for some people with Parkinson’s when symptoms are no longer well controlled with medication. It’s important to discuss this option with your Movement Disorder Neurologist, who can assess whether it’s suitable for you. Parkinson’s NSW also offers a DBS & Advanced Therapies Support Group – call our InfoLine to find out more.
- Safety and Communication Tools – Maintaining independence and safety is a priority for many people living with Parkinson’s. Tools such as personal alarms, falls detection devices, VitalCall systems, big button mobile phones, and other accessible technologies from providers like Simply Australia can be helpful. Contact the InfoLine for support in identifying suitable options for your needs or those of someone you care for.
- Managing Dry Mouth and Dry Eyes – Dry mouth and dry eyes are common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s and may be side effects of some medications. These symptoms can cause discomfort and impact quality of life. Strategies for relief include using artificial tears or saliva substitutes, staying hydrated, avoiding certain mouthwashes, and consulting a GP or pharmacist for further recommendations tailored to Parkinson’s-related care. Call our InfoLine to find out more.
For more support or information on any of these topics, please don’t hesitate to contact our Parkinson’s NSW InfoLine – we’re here to help.
