Practical support when it’s needed most

Practical support when it’s needed most

Every day, more people turn to Parkinson’s NSW for trusted information, practical support and connection as they navigate life with Parkinson’s.

Providing someone to turn to

A new diagnosis, changing symptoms or the challenge of navigating health and support systems can leave people unsure of what to do next. The Parkinson’s NSW InfoLine provides clear information, guidance and reassurance to people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers.

Over the past year, the InfoLine team responded to 5,233 contacts and provided 1,947 hours of direct assistance. People reached out for help finding neurologists and allied health services, understanding the NDIS and My Aged Care, accessing mental health support, exploring mobility and safety solutions, and connecting with education and peer support.

The value of having the right support is often expressed most simply by the people who receive it. After Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse Jemma helped one couple put additional care and ongoing guidance in place, the care partner said: “I now feel like someone has my back.”

Connection across NSW

No one should have to navigate Parkinson’s alone. Through 74 Support Groups across NSW, people living with Parkinson’s, family members and carers can connect with others who understand their experiences. With 78 percent of face-to-face groups located in regional and rural communities, that connection reaches people wherever they live.

For many people, a Support Group becomes much more than a monthly meeting. One participant shared: “I’ve been coming to this group for a while and I have made a best friend. That’s huge for me because for many years I felt isolated and lonely. Now my best friend and I go to exercise class together three times a week as well as the Support Group each month.”

Another described the Central Coast Parkinson’s Support Group as “like a big family” – a place to be themselves, share concerns and wins, learn from others and find hope to keep going.

With the number of people living with Parkinson’s expected to double by 2040, demand for these services will continue to grow. Calls to InfoLine have already doubled over the past four years. Your generosity helps more people find practical support, friendship and the reassurance that they do not have to face Parkinson’s on their own.
